Steady growth of the compact equipment market share

15/11/2017

In France, over the past several years, the compact equipment market share has been steadily increasing. This year, it represents 78% of the total earthmoving equipment market. It was 74% in 2010.

If heavy and compact earthmoving equipment are both growing, the general trend is that compact equipment performed stronger than heavy equipment with respectively +22% and +15% at the end of September. This applied in particular to mini excavators (+25%), compact wheel loaders (+26%) and compact wheel excavators (+43%). However, there are exceptions; skid-steer loader sales dropped by only 1% and sales of loader backhoes, which are in a structural decline since few years, were down 12% after -3% last year. Lastly, sales to renters stayed dynamic.

Since 2016, the earthmoving equipment fleet has been recovering. And, compact equipment is the one who benefit most from this trend.

Furthermore, with the development of cities, the compact equipment segment is well positioned. These machines are commonly used in urban engineering and small construction projects. This category of machines offers a high level of productivity as well as a reduced footprint on site.
