The French Mini Excavator Market in 2017

15/2/2018

The French mini excavator market grew by 24% in 2017. As in 2016, the most important segment is the [2,5-3 tonnes] segment. The department of Bouches-du-Rhône remain the biggest department in units sold.

As the market share of crawler excavators from 6 to 12 tonnes is stagnating between 6 and 8%, the French mini crawler excavators market is doing well. Mini excavators account for 68% of the total compact equipment market. With 11,574 machines sold in 2017, the French market almost reached its historical peak of 2007 (11,676 units). For one part, these good results are attributable to renters (+34% in 2017 vs 2016). But, this performance is also due to the other buyers (+20%).

Among the many characteristics of the French mini crawler excavator market in 2017, two features could be highlighted:

  • With 4150 units sold in 2017, the [2,5-3 tonnes] segment accounts for 36% of the total mini excavator market. This segment increased by 22% last year. Compared to 2016, the market share remained virtually unchanged. But, it has to be said that, the weight of this segment has been increasing since the crisis. It was 32% in 2010. Since 2010, the market share of this specific segment has grown for half of the 95 French departments.
  • The department of Bouches-du-Rhône accounts for 3,4% of the total mini excavator market, followed by the department of Rhône (2,9%). If this department is the biggest department in terms of volume sold last year, however, it isn’t the most dynamic one. In a growing market (+24% in 2017), the Bouches-du-Rhône department decreased slightly (-1,5%).
